First Day of School

First day of second grade {sniff}

secondgrade

We were early to the bus stop {yes we walked uphill} and after discovering we were on the wrong side of the street {guess we shouldn't listen tot eh other family that was new} we were in business. HIs backpack is FULLY loaded with all the required supplies and I hope come 3:57 when he climbs off that bus his day was a good one.

Chick naturally cried buckets as the bus {and her brother} pulled away without her. We've seen that before:

Want Patrick

This time it was just in walking stroller format.

First day of school is hard for everyone.

Ameswalker Hosiery Review

Not long ago I was contacted by the Vice-President at GS Schwartz & Co, Inc. asking if I wanted to review women's medical hosiery. Always game to try out new products I agreed. The product itself arrived and I was eager to see what made them different than regular hose.

The first thing I noticed is the strength of the product itself. Normally hosiery is very delicate and is catches and rips easily. The Ameswalker knee high I was given was very strong and durable but it had a very silky feel making wearing them comfortable. The heel is reinforced and the toes are open which at first I wasn't sure about. After awhile it felt more comfortable that way with no seam to stick to your toes.

The top of the knee high is also different with a much tighter thicker band to keep them up. It did feel tight at first but once I adjusted to the tighter feeling it became unnoticeable. I wore these around the house for awhile and was impressed that when I took them off they didn't leave a mark at the top like normal knee highs.

My right foot also benefitted from the tighter fit. Nearly four years ago I had surgery on my heel and even now I occasionally have pain. The compression knee high held my foot tight making it feel more comfortable than in a regular sock.

The compression hosiery product I tested was comfortable and beneficial. If you have a need for these products please visit Ameswalker at www.ameswalker.com and browse through their online product catalog.

What's Up Saturday

It's Saturday. I don't really post on Saturday's but I've had a great day today. Wanna know why?

Cycling Papa is home! Yea!

He even gets to stay longer than I thought so we get two whole weekends together. And for the first time ever (okay in the month we've lived here) I am alone with just ONE kid in the house. It's so nice cause she's easily entertained with Thomas.

This morning I did go to Nordstrom and I did actually come out after an hour and half (no worries Stacey, they didn't need the National Guard after all ;). Just to share some info - Did you know personal shoppers (as in they gather stuff for you beforehand and go back and forth getting you what you want) is a FREE service. Umm hmm. FREE. Just sign up for it by calling or going online to the wbsite and look under services. So that's what I did today.

I pretty much never buy stuff for myself so Cycling Papa forced me to go to Nordstrom and spend on me. Can we do that again next week honey? Cause that was fun! If you've never thought about a personal shopper or you are like me and find one shirt and then buy it every single color it comes in, this service is so nice. I have variety now, I have clothes that actually fit me correctly! (I tend to buy too big.)

And my saleslady she rocked. Even though she had partially blue hair she spoiled me and told me exactly what looked good and what didn't and helped me match stuff up (my worst thing). Plus she schlepped all the clothes for me. I didn't have to go and find a different size. Once she watched what I picked up after five minutes she set me in a dressing room and then kept bringing me stuff.

I wonder if she could come to my house and provide the same service....

Either way you should try this service. And did I mention it's FREE? It really is.

Love from a better dressed,

Chick's Story

*this was supposed to post tomorrow but I was tired and hit Publish Post. Oh well.

Yesterday when I announced that today we would be celebrating our two year Gotcha Day anniversary I had requests to tell the story of how Chick entered our lives. It is a long complicated story that begins 7 and half years ago. So pull up a comfy chair and your favorite snack.

On a cold day in February 2002 a little boy named Boo was born. Due to a bleeding problem I had to have surgery at his birth resulting in no longer being able to have children. It was fairly devastating but I got a perfect little boy in the process.

Fast forward 3 and half years. We finally decided to adopt a baby and our first choice was China because (at the time) they had a streamlined process, a small wait and manageable adoption fees. However I was only 28 and they require you to be thirty. Several months later we were offered the chance to move to Germany and even though we'd been about to start the process to adopt from Korea we put that on hold to move on to the adventure of living abroad. We also learned of Korea's inability to work with us as expatriates.

Two months after moving to Germany, after countless hours of research, I stumbled upon the wonderful country of Taiwan. They openly accepted expatriates into their adoption program and we signed with an agency in Washington.

While we were gathering our pictures and writing our letters to the birth family preparing for our homestudy we received heartbreaking news that our agency was closing. Since we had not been matched with a child we were refunded the fees we'd paid and turned away (along with a hundred other families).

At first I did nothing, I had no desire to continue with the process and placed a call to our social worker in germany asking him to halt any more gathering of information for our homestudy. After a very long tough week (where I would not have made it without the support of various adoption friends and groups) we decided to continue on and find a new agency.

We signed with our second agency at the end of July 2006. Little did we know our little Chick was about six weeks old at the time. There were a few ups and more than enough downs in the months that followed. {We were overall disappointed in our agency and their commitment to us as an adoptive family. You can search my archives for that story if you wish.}

Christmas came and went without any word of a child for us.

Until...

December 27, 2006 At 3 am were we had just landed in NJ after spending Christmas with my family in Idaho we saw we had an email from our agency with the words "Good News! A Match!"

In that email was a tiny 7 month old Si Xian (Sih Syuan) and she would eventually become our Chick. From that point we received update pictures about every 4-6 weeks while we continued to gather the papers we needed.

The process was very difficult in that we lived in Germany as Americans and we wanted to adopt a Taiwanese child. We had to go through a German court process to authenticate our paperwork, have all our documents notarized and hold our breath and hope that it would all somehow work out.

In May, far after we had thought we'd travel her first birthday came...and went with no word on a court ruling in Taiwan. It was the lowest of lows and I couldn't stop thinking about my daughter growing up far away from me.

In June we received news that our process was going to take even longer if we wanted to bring her to live with us in Germany on a Taiwan passport. The only option we had was to fly to Taiwan and wait (for an undetermined amount of time, which could have been anywhere from 4-6 weeks) for the German government to approve our petition to bring her into the country on a schengen visa.

In the end we opted to have Boo, Chick and myself live with my parents in Idaho for two months while we waited for Chick's American passport to be issued. Chick would be issued an IR3 visa making her a US Citizen the moment her Taiwan passport was stamped (normally children arrive on an IR4 visa and you must then apply for citizenship). We would be required to stay in Taipei (where Chick was living) until the official process of changing her household registration was completed (unique to Taiwan, basically the paper that changes her guardianship to us in which both adoptive parents must physically see the child before this happens for the IR3 visa - the only visa at this point we could get. This was to take two weeks but we only stayed in country for 9 days thanks to perseverance by our Taiwanese social worker who managed the form in the same day).

In mid July (the night Cycling Papa was to take me to see the new Harry Potter movie) we got word that we had final ruling and a Gotcha date of August 27, 2007. If your still reading and keeping track the day we met Chick was exactly 8 months after the first day we saw her picture.

We packed up and flew off to Taiwan, Boo and I coming from Idaho where we'd gone early to set things up for living with my parents and Cycling Papa from Germany. We met Chick around 10 am August 27, 2007 and the rest is history.

This is the little girl we fell in love with before she was ours -

Dec2

And this was her last night after dinner -

She is wild, full of giggles, she runs, loves trains and animals - especially the neighbors dog who is far bigger than she is. She loves fruit and vegetables and is easily amused. She is a joy and a wonder.

Most of all she's just my Chick.

This is last years Gotcha Day video:

Thank you to everyone who helped us through the adoption post and pre times and to all the adoptive families who are waiting and hoping. It does happen even though at times it seems like it never will.

song in video - Creed - With Arms Wide Open

**okay so I was REALLY tired and messed up the years originally when I posted. Started the process in 2006, adopted in 2007.

It's all about the Chick

Tomorrow celebrates two years home with the Chick! It's been wild, crazy, unpredictable and fun. There have been lots of laughter, giggles, tears and tantrums. So stop by and celebrate my favorite little lady as we blow out the candles on her two year Gotcha Day anniversary.

*By request I will have the whole story for tomorrow's post. Be prepared it's kind of long (bring coffee or popcorn).

Some Days I'd like to Scream

Do you ever have those days where you'd much rather pull the covers back up, snuggle into your pillow and forget you have responsibilities?

I'm kind of having that week...

It starts innocent enough (and for once it isn't about my kids making me insane). If I want to be totally honest it started over a week ago. Without going into too much detail I spoke with an old friend from a couple years ago (gotta love the interweb) and we chatted back and forth and I thought

Okay that was kind of nice to talk again

I went about my merry way. My email was going to be passed on to some others we hadn't seen in awhile and I got kind of excited about maybe connecting with some other people as well. So has my mailbox been flooded? Has my phone been ringing? Unless that was them at 3 am the other night then the answer to that would be no.

I'm not entirely sure what the point of contacting me was about. I haven't heard from them again and no one else has said hello. I'm not overly surprised I suppose but the thing is that it would have been nice to talk, maybe even meet up.

It felt like a car dealer's bait and switch trick. Get all comfy with a How the heck are you??! email and then disappear all over again like they never existed in the first place.

I'm finding with Facebook, Twitter and blogging this is pretty common. Mostly with Facebook and if I'm being honest I suppose I'm not really looking to be anything more than curious when I say okay to your friend requests. Of course I'd love to know what you've been doing in the past 14 years (can it really have been that long??) but I'm not going to send chatty emails and then stow away from sight for another 14 years.

What bugs me is the personal chitty chatty email and then the disappearing act. I can not be the only person who has experienced this.

Have you had the "Let's be friends again" email? Is there one person you would like to reconnect with?

*for reference this person I am talking about has nothing to do with facebook.

Random Tuesday Thoughts : Sand Version

It's Tuesday (duh) so that means it's Random Tuesday Thoughts day with Keely at the UnMom. I don't know how many more ways I can introduce her that I already haven't done. So it's just Tuesday and Random with Keely alright?

Yesterday we went down the shore. My kids have sand in places the sun doesn't shine. The waves were huge thanks to Hurricane Bill but Chick loved it when I held her arms and let her 'body surf' through the waves. Boo may have dug all the way to China. I don't know cause I still haven't found him yet.

Because the kids spent all day outside running around they ate second and third helpings of dinner and both fell asleep on the two hour drive home. Can we go to the beach everyday??

Cycling Papa is due to arrive for a week long visit on Friday (wahoo!) which means I get three solid FREE TIME hours on Saturday. I'm going to Nordstroms, I may not come back.

School starts on Monday. I can hardly believe it's already time even though I've prayed for school to start every. single. day. the entire summer. The bus comes at 8:35 and you can bet Boo's going to be on it.

The bus stop is across the street from the mailboxes, which is across the street from the pool which since we live at the END of the street means walking uphill past about forty houses and uphill onto the next street to the second corner. Did I mention it's UPHILL?

I had this free iTunes download sitting in my wallet from about two months ago that I finally cashed in. Thanks Starbucks! Every Tuesday when you buy a drink you get a free download. I got Ben Harper and Relentless7 song's Fly One Time. It's not too bad actually.

When I got home at 9 last night I had not one but two packages on the doorstep. I wish I could come home every night to something fun like that. (don't get too excited. The first package was a Harley motorcycle lamp my parents gave Cycling Papa the first year we lived in Germany and they've been kind enough to let us rent space in their closet to keep it until now. And the second was diapers. Like I said nothing exciting.)

Good thing the diapers didn't break! It reminds me of SciFi Dad's recent post about Packaging Overkill

My arms and legs ache from holding a 23 pound squealing kid in the ocean for three solid hours. But her smiles were worth it.

I think I talked non-stop yesterday to my mil and sil who were at the beach house. I'm sure they were glad to be rid of me by the time 7 'clock rolled around. I really ought to get out more I guess.

Not only did I forget my camera yesterday I didn't even take my phone up to the beach. I actually left it at the house. That is a first for me.

I haven't been visiting the blogs of the kind new people who've left comments recently (but if you have your email connected to your profile I have tried to respond that way. You don't have it hooked up? You should.). I know I suck and I owe you a visit. But this temporary single mom gig is way harder than I thought. I'll get to it. Eventually.

I'm done being random for now. I've got to go hoover all the sand from the floors that I keep stepping on. If you want to be Random go to the UnMom and link up (or just read up) or be Random in my comments. I promise I won't mind.

Monday's Muse with Cinnamon and Honey

It's Monday again. I'm out today but I want all of you to head over to see Robin at Cinnamon and Honey and join in on Monday's Muse. It's the newest craze!

1581884212_57276dd550_o

Today I want to have you all flashback with me to say 1998. On tv at the time there was an advertisement for Volkswagen. I can't remember if it was for the Jetta or Golf but I do remember liking the song. After researching it I figured out that the song was Da Da Da by Trio and yes I bought the cd (this was way before iTunes existed and you could just buy one song). The lyrics are very simple - there really aren't any. But the beat gets in your system after awhile and you can help but find yourself moving with it.

Da Da Da by Trio

aha
aha
aha

What you will and what you won't
What you do and what you don't
What you can and what you can't
This is what you need to know:
Loved you though it didn't show

Da da da I don't love you you don't love me
Da da da I don't love you you don't love me
Da da da I don't love you you don't love me
Da da da I don't love you you don't love me

(whispered)
Ich liebe dich nicht, du liebst mich nicht, aha
Ich liebe dich nicht, du liebst mich nicht, aha
Ich liebe dich nicht, du liebst mich nicht, aha
Ich liebe dich nicht, du liebst mich nicht.

I know why you ran away, aha
Understand you couldn't stay, aha
Wonder where you are today, aha
After all was said and done
It was right for you to run!

Da da da I don't love you you don't love me
Da da da I don't love you you don't love me
Da da da I don't love you you don't love me
Da da da I don't love you you don't love me

da da da (repeat to fade)

You may argue that one but I find it infectious. What sparked this memory?

I found the cd in a box over the weekend and had to pull it out and listen. The really funny thing is that it's a German group. For those who may be new here I just moved to the US after spending 3 1/2 years living in Germany. I found that kind of ironic.

I have trouble adding music into the actual posts so you can find the song at the top of my blog under Thought of the Day. I hope you enjoy.

In my quest for new music I also discovered Bon Iver thanks to imeem's $5 deal email. I purchased their For Emma, Forever Ago album. Just another look at a group I'm particularily enjoying these days. Take a peek at the link and tell me what you think.

What's inspiring you these days? Any music that's caught your ear? Please share it in the comments!

If you want to see who else is feeling inspired today be sure to head over to Cinnamon and Honey and tell Robin I sent you!

If you have loads of time...and more random things

A lot of bloggers have those cute posts entitled Look Through My House and Welcome To My Home. This isn't one of those type of posts. This is a nitty gritty look at a lived in house.

You can feel free to peruse and poke around. I took some pictures so that the family who read here can see where we live (I did forget the outside picture though, drats).

A breakdown of rooms if you feel confused (because who really needs three sitting rooms??): red couch - living room; blue couch with yellow chair - kids upstairs playroom/loft; green couch with yellow chair - sunroom/tv room; room with blue/green stripe carpet is my office area (or formerly the breakfast room off the kitchen). You know, where I come up with these witty posts.
Can you believe how much room I have in the garage? Another inch and the car wouldn't even have fit. The rest of the pictures should be obvious. No pics of the kids rooms. That would definitely have cps running to my door. Please excuse the general mess and disorganized look. It does at least look better than it did last week. And before you ask no, that is not my Star Wars pillowcase and stuffed panda bear in my bedroom. Boo slept with me the night before I took these pictures.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/momof2squirts/sets/72157621961578747/

Okay so the following has nothing to do with the pictures above or really anything much. But it's Friday so I'm just going to get it all out instead of waiting for my usual Random Tuesday posts.

What is up with the exorbitant postage prices? Really, I want to ship a bag to Ontario, Canada in a large padded mailer and with nothing attached (did you know you can't get delivery confirmation outside of the US? I didn't.) It's $16. If I want any kind of piddly confirmation it's $25. I only sold the thing for $60! Even across the US for a medium priority box it's $10.95, what happened to the postage for $8.90? Or even $6.10? What is going on in America these days when you can't even afford to go to the post office?

The other thing I need some serious opinions on: a doctor's visit for my kids. Monday we saw the nurse practitioner for Boo's check-up for school. She's very nice, friendly and competent.

Wednesday was Chick's visit with Dr F. From the get go I knew we had an issue. Here's how I described the event to Cycling Papa in an email:

I am not so sure I like this Dr F though and he's the specialist guy for this office

{we are supposed to see him for a consult for Boo about some stuff}.

During the course of the visit he tells me he has adhd.

{which I don't care about. I'm pretty sure my kid has it too. That wasn't what bugged me about him it was just weird that he mentioned it to me}

(and it is obvious as he can't stay on topic for more than two seconds) and the other thing that I really didn't like - he's examining chick in the diaper area like touching (not to be all weird) which is totally normal cause they gotta check that area but then he goes right to his computer without washing his hands...no sanitizer, no nothing. Who knows when he washed his hands before because he sure didn't wash in the room at any time in front of us. So I definitely didn't like that.

They did a stick blood test for Chick's hemoglobin (no gloves or anything). He also said after one glance at the records I brought where Chick had all those tests done {when we first brought her home in 2007} that he could see straight away she has Thallesemia. But yet the doctor we saw then who consulted a Thallesemia expert said she probably didn't and they couldn't know for sure without more testing for the genetic trait.

So what do I do? She's supposed to go back for a weight check in two months and he encouraged me to give her entemans chocolate cookies to gain weight. Seriously. I don't think junk food and empty calories are the way to get her to eat well and healthy and gain weight...I'm thinking another doctors office would be better suited for us.

So parental people give me YOUR opinions. Do you think I should trust this office? Am I being too critical of the little things? My son pointed out when I mentioned we may not go back to that doctor that he didn't wash his hands and that spreads germs. Right you are Boo, right you are.

Overall I didn't get a real good impression on my second visit and even the first didn't blow me away (as we were ten minutes early for our appointment and still had to wait thirty minutes past our time to be seen and we'd been told we were seeing Dr G and we didn't even see a doctor at all - not that it really mattered. I also didn't fill out a single medical profile for either kid. That was very strange).

Is there anything wrong with this doctor and the office or am I just completely insane? Let me hear it.
And for Kat at Sunshine and Lemonade here are some pictures of my Reseinthal shopping basket.

Maybe I'll share some recipes on Monday :)

Writers Workshop with Mama Kat!

It's Writer's Workshop day over at Mama Kat's Losin' It! Please stop by and visit all the other wonderful bloggers who have something to say today.(*despite what you may or may not see below these paragraphs ARE spaced - double spaced. But blogger is blogger after all. And sucks.)

Prompt 3 - What would you put in your favorite things giveaway?

Well it would be a mixed basket of items. Completely random and strange but somehow they would make up my favorite things. The list would look like this:

Sweet Baby Ray's Honey BBQ Sauce (only available at Shop Rite) - This beats JD's Sauce or Texas Masterpiece anyday of the week my friends. If you don't have it your area let me know I may just send you some.

Coffee - Green Mountian Pumpkin Spice, it's almost time to be able to buy it again (since it's a seasonal flavor). I've ordered my catalog to be sure I don't miss out this year. I'm thinking 12 bags should hold me over for awhile.

Mancala - It's a game. Available at Target for $4.99 It's a very simple game with a wooden board and marbles and the idea is to get more marbles in your home space than the other person. It's a lot of fun and while it seems very simple it requires strategy and thinking. My seven year old loves it.

A book - It would be hard to say which book because I have so many favorites. It could be book seven of the Harry Potter series. It could be Anna Karenina. It could be Bel Canto. At any rate a book would be sure to be nestled in among the tissue paper.

A Reisenthal shopping basket - We bought one in Germany (because they do not provide bags, plastic or otherwise there, you have to buy them. Incidentially they don't bag your things either that's all on you. So now it makes me nuts when clerks here try to do it for me. I like my own way thanks.) I love my basket. It may have cost me 49.99 euros but it was so very worth it. Search Reisenthal or try Reisenthal.de if you'd like to buy one for yourself.

Recipes - I love to cook and I enjoy getting recipes from others so the times I've particiapted in favorite things swaps I've tried to include them. I would include my recipes for: Sausage Jambalaya (I may not be able to spell it but I can cook it). Heartwarming Chilli. Penne with vodka tomato sauce. Penne with proscuitto and parmesan cream sauce. Homemade macaroni and cheese. Grandma D's Thanksgiving stuffing. Not exactly light fair but how hard is it to open a bag of salad with most of those?

So that would fill up my basket of goodies. What would your basket look like? What are your favorite things? Be sure to tell em here or head over to Mama Kat's and link up your own post!

Screaming, FLip FloPs and Spiders

Spiders. There are some big freaky freaking spiders here in the wilds of suburban Philadelphia. It could be that my yard backs up to a forested area. It could be that we had stragglers sleeping our boxes and they've come alive. I don't really know. And I don't really care all I know is I'm up at 11 pm writing about spiders because the mother of all spiders just waltzed across my bedroom floor towards my bed like he owned the dang place.

Slight screaming, throwing of flip flop and general hysteria ensued.

But I got that freaky spider and I'm happy to say he's swimming with the fishies or whatever else may be down the sewer pipes. (that begs a question: when you kill a bug do you flush it or throw it away in the trash can? does it depend on the bug? just curious)

I am okay-not okay with bugs but spiders freak the crap out of me and if they have to be in the house they need to stay CONFINED to the basement dungeon where they belong. (again, a question: does anyone else call their basement The Dungeon? is it just me? maybe this is why I find basements unsettling...)

I am wondering with the unbelievable amount of crap we have in the basement and I'm talking we could make a mint in a yard sale amount of stuff if bombing the space is an option. You know bug bombs. Do they work? Actually do they even make those?

I don't know but something has got to go and it had better be the spiders. I think I'll go sleep with one of my stinky kids because the idea of that spider having some friends hiding under the bed or the couch or the dresser in my room...shudder. I'll spend the night clawing myself thinking they are crawling all over me.

What freaks you out? Bugs? Spiders? Snakes? Let's hear it.

Oh and head over to Venus vs Mars today.  I'm covering the mystery of the Magic 8 Ball. Intrigued aren't you?

Random Tuesday Thoughts: YoYo Get Your Hands OFF Your Sister

It's time to get random again boys and girls with Keely at The Un Mom, the Un-est mom I know! Now where did I leave that fugly button this time??

Ah there it is so here you go:
So, spiders. Do you have freaky gigantor spiders? I do. Be sure to come back tomorrow and read all about it.

Since it's too gosh dang hot to go outside (today - the weather said "feels like 100 degrees" - sticky) in the two weeks we've been living here we are stuck watching tv or rather movies. I think I have The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe memorized (though it's an awesome flick).

I gained and lost a follower today.  But they were different people.  Don't you wish you could get a "this person has defected" email so you could know who it was and shake them down for the reason?  I always think, well crap, my post must have really sucked today!

I have a fireplace here (which I hate) and this big white space above it. Do you know how crazy it makes me that I can't figure out what to do with that space? Candlesticks? Art? Russian Matryoshka Dolls?

You talkin' to me?

IMG_1174

Cycling Papa (aka Hubby) was so busy at work yesterday the most stressful thing he did was to try to figure out which car to buy. Honda Accord or Nissan Altima? Hmm, yeah.

When the sun goes down the noise from the bugs outside my bedroom window is amazing. It's like a wild nature sound exhibit.

Last night I lit some candles in my bathroom around the tub.  You know the behomoth, sunken double person tub that only my kids have actually used? Anyway I was in the mood to take a bubble bath (it's a chic thing) but it was about midnight so I nixed that idea in favor of sitting on the edge of the tub in the glow of the candles eating ice cream.  (Yes I not only ate ice cream at midnight but while sitting next to the bathtub.) It was only as I was blowing out the candles that I realized there was a bottle of biff cleaner with bleach in the back corner ledge. Fire+Andrea=The grateful feeling of knowing the house has a sprinkler system.

I love the area where we live but I don't love the traffic. Our car insurance (for one car) is almost double here what it was when we lived in N. Maryland four years ago. There is that much traffic that the chance of an accident significantly impacts our rates. Geesh.

There are at least six houses on our street alone for sale (and seven if you count ours, even though our landlord does not have it currently for sale since we are renting it). Lot's of houses, no buyers.

I feel like going visiting on Sundays though because they all have open houses and I could pop from one to the other and 'check out the neighbors'. See what they have above their fireplaces...

All I have is house related random.  And if it's related is it really random?

There is good random I get to share, just a tidbit peek for now. I'm going to be writing a column for a motherhood ezine starting in January called Life in My Backyard. I'm thrilled to have been offered the opportunity. Stay tuned for more details as the launch is set for September and I'll be having a party here.

That's it. I haven't got any more random. No funny pictures, crazy stories or anything else random worthy. You should go over to Keely's and take a peek at the other random junkies and see what they have to say. Well, at least I hope Random Tuesday is still on since Keely's been away on this mondo fabulous vacation. If not, well, feel free to be random in my comments then, I really don't mind.

Cinnamon and Honey: It's not just good on toast

There's something special happening today.

You see awhile back Robin of C&H said she'd like to do a meme of her own. A musical meme since music is one of her passions. Music just happens to be a passion of mine as well so when I got the official announcement from Robin that today this Monday is Monday's Muse I simply had to join in. Here's the official description from Robin at Cinnamon and Honey:

It's called "Monday's Muse" and it's a meme for all things inspirational. Here's your chance to share something that's currently meaningful to you... a song, a video, a poem, a book... or anything that's gotten into your head and you can't get rid of. If it's important, I want to know all about it. I'd love it if you stopped by to find out what's got everyone movin' and shakin'. Can't wait to see you there!

I've got a song that's Swinging in my mind a lot and now it can official swing thanks to getting back online and buying it off iTunes. In case you hadn't guessed by my oh so clever wordplay I'm talking about Strawberry Swing by Coldplay.

This song just seems to scream summer and warm breezes and running in the grass with no shoes. At least to me it does. It sounds fantastic in my living room while I'm reading, it sounds wonderful in my kitchen/office while I'm cooking or writing and it even sounds great rolling around in my mini-van.

Here are the words:

They were sitting
They were sitting in the strawberry swing
Every moment was so precious

They were sitting
They were talking in the strawberry swing
Everybody was for fighting
Wouldn't want to waste a thing

Cold cold water, bring me 'round
Now my feet won't touch the ground
Cold cold water, whatcha say?
It's such, it's such a perfect day
It's such a perfect day

I remember
We were walking up to strawberry swing
I can't wait 'til the morning
Wouldn't want to change a thing

People moving all the time
Inside a perfectly straight line
Don't you wanna just curve away?
And it's such, it's such a perfect day
It's such a perfect day

Ahh...

Now the sky could be blue
I don't mind
Without you, it's a waste of time

Could be blue
I don't mind
Without you, it's a waste of time

Now the sky could be blue
Could be grey
Without you, I'm just miles away

Now the sky could be blue
I don't mind
Without you, it's a waste of time

The Good Life

I’m back. The internet is connected again thankfully and that means I can get back to being me. You might have notice I'm going to be a commenting fiend over the weekend I 'm so giddy to be able to read blogs again. Unfortunately I can’t read every post and visit every blog because after two weeks of nada-zip-zilch-zero internet, it’s just not possible. Well it is possible but I’m not going to be able to do it.

In my internet-less state over the past two weeks it’s been really strange not to que up the computer and sit down with a cup of java and start my day the way I have been for the last year or two. In many ways it’s been nice because I’ve been reading more (and bad because I also get sucked into books until after midnight), doing more hands on playing with my kids and I was able to tackle quite a few of the remaining thirty or so boxes scattered about the living areas of the house. I even baked some lemon poppy seed bread and I plan to get around to Multi-Tasking Mommy’s Chocolate Cake sometime next week. (I’m linking the recipe from her site but be warned just looking at the picture may add about five pounds to your waistline).

Of course now that the internet is back on I’m thrilled. I can order pizza online. I can find what I need like addresses and phone numbers.

The kids and I are off to watch The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. Now that the internet is on, life is good!

Random Tuesday Thoughts: Shuttered in

It's Tuesday (or it might be Monday or Wednesday who knows?) But either way it's time to get random with Keely at www.theunmom.com

I'm late today but what else is new?

Without internet there's not much to do but spy on the neighbors.

The neighbors we can't spy on are super nice. They have kids and a dog. What more could we ask for?

We walked to get the mail the other day and from now on unless we are going to the pool (across the street from the mailboxes) we will drive. It's a long walk. Pushing a stroller. Uphill.

I'm finding things in boxes I haven't seen in almost four years. I also found my first passport - from 1993. Freaky.

I've been to Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Target, Acme, Giant and Ikea in the last four days. I'm shopped out.

My kids love swimming in the tub in the master bathroom.

My three year old used the potty three times yesterday. Wahoo! She also sleeps in a big girl twin bed now. She getting all grown up on me.

Our landlady had the driveway sealcoated yesterday and now I can't get in my garage till Friday because it wont dry. Well DUH. Its 93 degrees with 90 percent humidity. What did she expect?

Our whole cul-de-sac is a no park fire zone. I've decided to buck the rules and park anyway. Its too freakin' hot to walk halfway down the street.

For more random Random visit the Un-Mom and get your fix on.

Life in lala land

When you are faced with no internet (for seven more days at least Comcast tells me thanks to Verizon 'accidentally' cutting the line), two hornets nests at the front door (did you know these freaking things build nests underground??) And the case of the missing trash bags (we are required to buy specific bags at 2 bucks a pop as a trash service tax, yet I can't buy them anywhere I've been today...) You say screw it and go to dunkin donuts with the kids instead.

So I'll be mia...again until the internet thing gets resolved. It is my hope that at least one or two of you will still be reading by the time I get back. Please.

How Much??!

*This post is brought to you today by scheduled blogger. I'm busy unpacking boxes, directing movers and praying the cable guy WILL come between 12 and 4 like they promised.

In this whole moving thing I knew there would be expenses. I knew groceries and household stuff costs a lot more now than it did 3 1/2 years ago. But just how much I hadn't realized. Friday I went to Tarjay (my most beloved and missed place on the planet) to stock up on cleaning supplies, paper products and the like. I'm not a huge name brand shopper except when it comes to certain things like detergent. I have to use Cheer Free because I am freakishly allergic to a lot of detergents.

64 load bottle of Cheer Free and Clear $12.19 (the larger bottle was over $17 and I started hyperventilating in the aisle)

Okay, that had to be a fluke thing though right? Surely things all haven't gotten super expensive while I was gone.

12 pack of Tarjay brand toilet paper $5.89 (really? for something that you use you know where and flush?)

8 or 10 pack (can't remember) Bounty paper towels $8.99 (one of those name brand things I will spring for. nothing is worse than a paper towel that doesn't soak up stuff)

I'm thinking the 800 sheet pack I saw at BJ's was a better deal...

The next top ticket items besides a toilet brush (for $5.99) and a cleaning caddy which I didn't have (for $8.99) was for dishwasher gel (100 oz $4.49) and a three pack of Kleenex brand tissues (for $4.49)

Are these prices reasonable? Normal? To be expected? I posted Thursday about saving money at the grocery store and got lots of ideas for coupons and such and loading up when the item is on sale. But I was still flabbergasted when the cashier told me my total was $98.18

$98.18??! For this?

Not pictured - paper towels, toilet paper

I think I got so much sticker shock because I haven't bought these items in so long and I had to buy them all at once. We were not allowed to bring any cleaners, detergents or liquids of any kind from Germany. If the bottle were to break or leak during transport (which is a month long) the company would not pay the insurance to replace anything that got ruined. So I have to start from scratch.

Next stop? Food shopping Saturday afternoon in my new neighborhood. I need sugar, ketchup, salt, spices, coffee, olive oil - basically every staple found in a pantry. Please join me in praying that our appliances still work and I don't have to replace those too!

I've gained a little bit...

It's Monday. First Monday of the month. Which means it's HASAY update day. The HASAY creator, Casey of Half as Good as You fame has thankfully told us to only post our updates once a month.

I don't how it's Hawaiian but it sounds nice anyway.

If you've read this blog in the last month you'll already know I've got a very bad rep over at Dairy Queen. I turn into this crazed woman when it comes to their Blizzards. Girls Scout Tagalongs are my favorite. Now Casey mentioned to me the other day she recently enjoyed a Thin Mint one...why can't we get those ones here?

Thin Mint and Tagalong Cookies - any Girl Scout within a five mile radius better watch out come cookie time. You need someone to look after the cookies? You can park your cookie wagon in my garage anytime.

redwagon

I've also been drinking the lovely Dr Pepper. Remember when I said DP in Germany was rare?

It is. It is not here in PA though.

So sugar drink 582 Andrea 0

Hmm, what else? Starbucks drive throughs are too freakin' convenient I'll say that much.

Suffice it to say I have not been good like Keely who's been running or FoN who's locked away on vacation and has time to think up good lies if she's fallen from the wagon.

I don't even have any good excuses except to say I haven't been around good food like this (you know sugary preservative filled crap) in a long time.

I look forward to next months HASAY update where I can hopefully tell you I've been a good girl and eaten only veggies and drunk V8 and been so healthy you wouldn't even recognize me. But if I think really hard about what's in the freezer and pantry right now (peanut butter ice cream, two boxes of fudge brownie mix) that really would be pushing it. So yeah, I've gained a pound or three this month, you wanna make something of it?

Have you fallen off the wagon? Want to get back on or just learn what I'm talking about? Then head over to Casey's at Half As Good As You and jump on the HASAY bandwagon. We welcome all new fitness victims.

*if I don't reply to your comment, don't worry I'm not buried under Girl Scout boxes, just boxes in general.
**as I type I'm eating Frosted Animal Cookies. I thought it said 18 cookies was a serving...turns out it's 8.
